A vulnerability was found in Apple Safari up to 6.2.7/7.1.7/8.0.7 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component WebKit. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. The weakness was disclosed 08/11/2015 with Apple as HT205033 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at support.apple.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Apple. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-3744 since 05/07/2015. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The advisory points out:
Multiple memory corruption issues existed in WebKit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 85408 (Mac OS X 10.10.x < 10.10.5 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168651 (OpenSuSE Security Update for Security webkit2gtk3 (openSUSE-SU-2016:0761-1)).
Upgrading to version 6.2.8, 7.1.8 or 8.0.8 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:
