A vulnerability was found in Apple iOS up to 8.4.0 (Smartphone Operating System) and classified as critical. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component Kernel. The kernel in Apple iOS before 8.4.1 and OS X before 10.10.5 does not properly restrict the mach_port_space_info interface, which allows attackers to obtain sensitive memory-layout information via a crafted app.
The weakness was presented 08/11/2015 by Ilja van Sprundel with Google Project Zero as HT205030 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at support.apple.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-3766 since 05/07/2015. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 90315 (Apple TV < 7.2.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc.. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 123806 (Apple Mac OS X v10.10.5 and Security Update 2015-006 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2015-08-13-2)).
Upgrading to version 8.4.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
