A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Apple iOS up to 8.4.0 (Smartphone Operating System). This affects an unknown part of the component Libc. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. The weakness was disclosed 08/11/2015 by Ilja van Sprundel with Google Project Zero as HT205030 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-3798 since 05/07/2015. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by Google Security Research and been published 2 months after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $100k and more. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 90315 (Apple TV < 7.2.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. Upgrading to version 8.4.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
