The xen_iret function in arch/x86/xen/xen-asm_32.S in the Linux kernel before 3.7.9 on 32-bit Xen paravirt_ops platforms does not properly handle an invalid value in the DS segment register, which allows guest OS users to gain guest OS privileges via a crafted application.

The weakness was shared 02/13/2013 with Xen as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-0228 since 12/06/2012. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68789 (Oracle Linux 6 : kernel (ELSA-2013-0630)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195400 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux-ec2 Vulnerabilities (USN-1808-1)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
