PHP Regex Memory information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in PHP (Programming Language Software) (version now known). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component Regex Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability (Memory). The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

The weakness was disclosed 08/17/2015 as ZDI-15-394 as confirmed advisory (ZDI). The advisory is shared for download at zerodayinitiative.com. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592. The advisory points out:

The specific flaw exists within the handling of invalid regular expressions. The issue lies in the failure to properly initialize pointers in a buffer while executing a regular expression. An attacker can leverage this to disclose the contents of any address in memory in the context of the process running PHP.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 308 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at vcs.pcre.org.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at X-Force (105673). VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
