Wireshark up to 1.12.6 epan/proto.c proto_tree_add_bytes_item input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in Wireshark up to 1.12.6 (Packet Analyzer Software). Affected is the function proto_tree_add_bytes_item of the file epan/proto.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

The proto_tree_add_bytes_item function in epan/proto.c in the protocol-tree implementation in Wireshark 1.12.x before 1.12.7 does not properly terminate a data structure after a failure to locate a number within a string, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted packet.

The weakness was presented 08/24/2015 (Website). The advisory is available at code.wireshark.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2015-6241 since 08/14/2015. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 86156 (Debian DSA-3367-1 : wireshark - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 124189 (Solaris 11.3 Support Repository Update (SRU) 1.5.0 Missing).

Upgrading to version 1.12.7 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (86156) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-52310†). See VDB-76766, VDB-76767, VDB-77419 and VDB-77420 for similar entries. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
