A vulnerability was found in MediaWiki up to 1.23.9/1.24.2/1.25.1 (Content Management System) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function ApiBase::getWatchlistUser of the component CSRF Protection. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross-site request forgery vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-352. The web application does not, or can not, sufficiently verify whether a well-formed, valid, consistent request was intentionally provided by the user who submitted the request. Impacted is integrity. The ApiBase::getWatchlistUser function in MediaWiki before 1.23.10, 1.24.x before 1.24.3, and 1.25.x before 1.25.2 does not perform token comparison in constant time, which allows remote attackers to guess the watchlist token and bypass CSRF protection via a timing attack.
The weakness was published 09/01/2015 by Rick (Website). The advisory is shared for download at lists.wikimedia.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-6728 since 08/27/2015. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

Upgrading to version 1.23.10, 1.24.3 or 1.25.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
