A vulnerability was found in MediaWiki up to 1.23.9/1.24.2/1.25.1 (Content Management System). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown part of the file thumb.php of the component ForeignAPI Image Handler. The manipulation of the argument f with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-79. Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in thumb.php in MediaWiki before 1.23.10, 1.24.x before 1.24.3, and 1.25.x before 1.25.2 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via the f parameter, which is not properly handled in an error page, related to "ForeignAPI images."
The weakness was disclosed 09/01/2015 by Rick (Website). The advisory is available at lists.wikimedia.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-6730 since 08/27/2015. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059.007 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
By approaching the search of inurl:thumb.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 85698 (Fedora 23 : mediawiki-1.25.2-2.fc23 (2015-13920)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 123934 (Fedora Security Update for mediawiki (FEDORA-2015-13920)).
Upgrading to version 1.23.10, 1.24.3 or 1.25.2 eliminates this vulnerability.
