A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows Vista SP2 up to Server 2012 R2 (Operating System). It has been classified as problematic. Windows Journal in Microsoft Windows Vista SP2, Windows Server 2008 SP2 and R2 SP1, Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012 Gold and R2, Windows RT Gold and 8.1, and Windows 10 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (data loss) via a crafted .jnt file, aka "Windows Journal DoS Vulnerability."
The weakness was disclosed 09/08/2015 by Kai Lu with Fortinet's FortiGuard Labs as MS15-097 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2015-2516 since 03/19/2015. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 85876 (MS15-098: Vulnerabilities in Windows Journal Could Allow Remote Code Execution (3089669)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 91090 (Microsoft Windows Journal Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS15-098)).
Applying the patch MS15-097 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (85876), SecurityFocus (BID 76559†), SecurityTracker (ID 1033484†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-52510†).
