Details
A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox up to 18.0 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality. The manipulation as part of a Eingabe leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Multiple unspecified vulnerabilities in the browser engine in Mozilla Firefox before 19.0, Firefox ESR 17.x before 17.0.3, Thunderbird before 17.0.3, Thunderbird ESR 17.x before 17.0.3, and SeaMonkey before 2.16 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via unknown vectors.
The weakness was disclosed 02/19/2013 by Olli Pettay, Christoph Diehl, Gary Kwong, Jesse Ruderman, Andrew McCreight, Joe Drew and Wayne Mery (Inferno) with Google Chrome Security Team as MFSA 2013-21 as confirmed advisory (Mozilla Blog). The advisory is shared for download at mozilla.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-0783 since 01/02/2013. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 64692 (CentOS 5 / 6 : devhelp / firefox / libproxy / xulrunner / yelp (CESA-2013:0271)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120882 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2013:0271)).
Upgrading to version 19.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (64692), SecurityFocus (BID 58030†), OSVDB (90429†), Secunia (SA52240†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1028162†). The entries VDB-7761, VDB-7762, VDB-7763 and VDB-7764 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
