Details
A vulnerability was found in Red Hat Linux and Fedora 6 (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function error in the library glibc of the component OpenSSH. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
A certain Red Hat build of the pam_ssh_agent_auth module on Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6 and Fedora Rawhide calls the glibc error function instead of the error function in the OpenSSH codebase, which allows local users to obtain sensitive information from process memory or possibly gain privileges via crafted use of an application that relies on this module, as demonstrated by su and sudo.
The weakness was published 06/22/2012 by Agent with Red Hat as RHSA-2013:0519-2 as confirmed advisory (Red Hat Security Advisory). It is possible to read the advisory at rhn.redhat.com. The public release has been coordinated with Red Hat. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-5536 since 10/24/2012. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69724 (Amazon Linux AMI : openssh (ALAS-2013-165)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350581 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for openssh: ALAS-2013-165).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at pkgs.fedoraproject.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
