A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Alt-N MDaemon up to 13.0.3 (Mail Server Software). Affected by this issue is the function STARTTLS of the component IMAP Server. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cross-site request forgery vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-352. The web application does not, or can not, sufficiently verify whether a well-formed, valid, consistent request was intentionally provided by the user who submitted the request. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was presented 10/24/2012 with Alt-N as 24535 as confirmed changelog entry (Website). The advisory is available at files.altn.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed by QSecure / Demetris Papapetrou and been published 5 months after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept.
Upgrading to version 13.0.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
