A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Apple iTunes up to 12.2 (Multimedia Player Software). Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the component Software Update. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-269. The Software Update component in Apple iTunes before 12.3 does not properly handle redirection, which allows man-in-the-middle attackers to discover encrypted SMB credentials via unspecified vectors.
The weakness was disclosed 09/16/2015 as HT205221 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-5920 since 08/06/2015. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project. The advisory points out:
A redirection issue existed in the handling of certain network connections. This issue was addressed through improved resource validation.

It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 124144 (Apple iTunes Prior to 12.3 Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2015-09-16-3)).
Upgrading to version 12.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
