A vulnerability was found in XenSource Xen (Virtualization Software) (affected version not known) and classified as problematic. This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component PV Device Support. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-17. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
libxl in Xen 4.1.x through 4.6.x does not properly handle the readonly flag on disks when using the qemu-xen device model, which allows local guest users to write to a read-only disk image.
The weakness was disclosed 09/22/2015 as XSA-142 as confirmed security advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at xenbits.xen.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-7311 since 09/22/2015. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 86055 (Fedora 23 : xen-4.5.1-8.fc23 (2015-15943)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168293 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for xen (SUSE-SU-2015:2326-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
