A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox up to 40 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. This issue affects some unknown processing of the file NetworkUtils.cpp. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. NetworkUtils.cpp in Mozilla Firefox before 41.0 and Firefox ESR 38.x before 38.3 might allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact via unknown vectors.
The weakness was published 09/24/2015 by Christian Holler (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.mozilla.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-4517 since 06/10/2015. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 86514 (CentOS 5 / 6 / 7 : firefox (CESA-2015:1834)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168108 (OpenSuSE Security Update for MozillaFirefox (openSUSE-SU-2015:1658-1)).
Upgrading to version 41.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 20821.
