Mozilla Firefox before 41.0 and Firefox ESR 38.x before 38.3 allow remote attackers to bypass CORS preflight protection mechanisms by leveraging (1) duplicate cache-key generation or (2) retrieval of a value from an incorrect HTTP Access-Control-* response header.
The weakness was disclosed 09/24/2015 by Christian Holler (Website). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.mozilla.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-4520 since 06/10/2015. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1211 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 86514 (CentOS 5 / 6 / 7 : firefox (CESA-2015:1834)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168108 (OpenSuSE Security Update for MozillaFirefox (openSUSE-SU-2015:1658-1)).
Upgrading to version 41.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 20821.
