VMware ESX/ESXi up to 4.0/5.0 NFC Protocol memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability marked as critical has been reported in VMware ESX and ESXi up to 4.0/5.0. Affected is an unknown function of the component NFC Protocol Handler. Performing a manipulation results in memory corruption. This vulnerability is cataloged as CVE-2013-1659. Furthermore, there is an exploit available. It is suggested to install a patch to address this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in VMware ESX and ESXi up to 4.0/5.0 (Virtualization Software). It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown code of the component NFC Protocol Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

VMware vCenter Server 4.0 before Update 4b, 5.0 before Update 2, and 5.1 before 5.1.0b; VMware ESXi 3.5 through 5.1; and VMware ESX 3.5 through 4.1 do not properly implement the Network File Copy (NFC) protocol, which allows man-in-the-middle attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) by modifying the client-server data stream.

The weakness was shared 02/21/2013 by Alex Chapman with Context Information Security as VMSA-2013-0003 as confirmed advisory (vmware.com). The advisory is shared at vmware.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-1659 since 02/12/2013. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 65223 (VMware vCenter Server NFC Protocol Code Execution (VMSA-2013-0003)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc.. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 216080 (VMware ESXi 3.5 Patch Release ESXe350-201302401-I-SG Missing (KB2042543)).

Upgrading to version 4.1 or 5.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (82270), Tenable (65223), SecurityFocus (BID 58115†), OSVDB (90554†) and Secunia (SA52332†). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
