Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 3.7.5 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function hidp_setup_hid of the file net/bluetooth/hidp/core.c of the component Bluetooth. The manipulation of the argument ioctl(HIDPCONNADD) with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. Impacted is confidentiality. CVE summarizes:
The hidp_setup_hid function in net/bluetooth/hidp/core.c in the Linux kernel before 3.7.6 does not properly copy a certain name field, which allows local users to obtain sensitive information from kernel memory by setting a long name and making an HIDPCONNADD ioctl call.
The weakness was presented 01/10/2013 by Anderson Lizardo as e1c63f9f42393f7c1dc072db7e0d54e599e96b46 as not defined changelog entry (Website). The advisory is shared for download at kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-0349 since 12/06/2012. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.
After before and not just, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is available at git.kernel.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68851 (Oracle Linux 5 / 6 : Unbreakable Enterprise kernel (ELSA-2013-2519)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166270 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for Linux kernel (SUSE-SU-2013:0759-2)).
Upgrading to version 3.7.6 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (82271), Tenable (68851), SecurityFocus (BID 58112†), OSVDB (90553†) and Secunia (SA52340†). See VDB-7812 for similar entry. VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
