It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability has been found in Google Android 5.0/5.1 (Smartphone Operating System) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the component libstagefright. The manipulation as part of a MP3/MP4 File leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
libstagefright in Android through 5.1.1 LMY48M allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via crafted metadata in a (1) MP3 or (2) MP4 file.
The weakness was released 10/01/2015 by Joshua J. Drake with Zimperium Mobile Security Labs as New Vulnerability Processing MP3/MP4 Media as confirmed advisory (Blog). The advisory is shared for download at blog.zimperium.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-3876 since 05/12/2015. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 02/03/2018). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 47 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $100k and more. The advisory illustrates:
The vulnerability lies in the processing of metadata within the files, so merely previewing the song or video would trigger the issue. Since the primary attack vector of MMS has been removed in newer versions of Google’s Hangouts and Messenger apps, the likely attack vector would be via the Web browser.
Upgrading to version 5.1.1 eliminates this vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:
At the heart of all Zimperium technology is our z9 engine, which has been trained with the capability to detect media processing attacks through all attack vectors. No additional update is required to detect this new pair of vulnerabilities. We are diligently monitoring sources for in-the-wild attacks.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (106876), SecurityFocus (BID 76940†), SecurityTracker (ID 1033725†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-53231†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-78187 and VDB-78197. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
