A vulnerability was found in Google Android 2.0/3.0/4.0/5.0 (Smartphone Operating System) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown function of the component libutils. libutils in Android through 5.1.1 LMY48M allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via crafted metadata in a (1) MP3 or (2) MP4 file, as demonstrated by an attack against use of libutils by libstagefright in Android 5.x.
The weakness was disclosed 10/01/2015 with Zimperium Mobile Security Labs as New Vulnerability Processing MP3/MP4 Media as confirmed advisory (Blog). The advisory is shared at blog.zimperium.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-6602 since 08/21/2015. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 02/03/2018). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future.
Upgrading to version 5.1 eliminates this vulnerability.
