libutils in Android through 5.1.1 LMY48M allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via crafted metadata in a (1) MP3 or (2) MP4 file, as demonstrated by an attack against use of libutils by libstagefright in Android 5.x.

The weakness was disclosed 10/01/2015 with Zimperium Mobile Security Labs as New Vulnerability Processing MP3/MP4 Media as confirmed advisory (Blog). The advisory is shared at blog.zimperium.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-6602 since 08/21/2015. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 02/03/2018). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future.

Upgrading to version 5.1 eliminates this vulnerability.
