The Address Book framework in Apple OS X before 10.11 allows local users to gain privileges by using an environment variable to inject code into processes that rely on this framework.
The weakness was published 10/09/2015 by Ilja van Sprundel with IOActive (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-5897 since 08/06/2015. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370192 (Apple Mac OS X v10.11 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2015-09-30-3)).
Upgrading to version 10.11 eliminates this vulnerability.
