Todd Miller sudo 1.8.6p6 Authentication Time Reset access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Todd Miller sudo 1.8.6p6 (Operating System Utility Software). This issue affects an unknown functionality of the component Authentication Handler. The manipulation as part of a Time Reset leads to a access control vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-264. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

sudo 1.6.0 through 1.7.10p6 and sudo 1.8.0 through 1.8.6p6 allows local users or physically proximate attackers to bypass intended time restrictions and retain privileges without re-authenticating by setting the system clock and sudo user timestamp to the epoch.

The weakness was released 02/27/2013 by Marco Schoepl as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The public release happened without involvement of Todd Miller. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-1775 since 02/19/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. The successful exploitation needs a simple authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 12/30/2024). MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue. Due to its background and reception, this vulnerability has a historic impact.

A public exploit has been developed by metasploit and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 71300 (Scientific Linux Security Update : sudo on SL6.x i386/x86_64), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Scientific Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350485 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for sudo: ALAS-2013-259). The advisory illustrates:

As long as the user has successfully run sudo before, they are able to run "sudo -k" to reset the time stamp file. This action does not require a password and is not logged. If the user is also able to reset the date and time to the epoch (1970-01-01 01:00:00), they will be able to run sudo without having to authenticate.

Upgrading to version 1.7.10p7 or 1.8.6p7 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at sudo.ws. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (82452), Exploit-DB (27944), Tenable (71300), SecurityFocus (BID 58203†) and OSVDB (90677†). h-online.com is providing further details. Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-10298, VDB-10299, VDB-10300 and VDB-10301.
