Oracle Java SE up to 7 Update 15 JVM Process Memory memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability was found in Oracle Java SE up to 7 Update 15 and classified as critical. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component JVM Process Memory Handler. Executing a manipulation can lead to memory corruption. This vulnerability appears as CVE-2013-1493. In addition, an exploit is available. A patch should be applied to remediate this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as very critical was found in Oracle Java SE up to 7 Update 15 (Programming Language Software). This vulnerability affects an unknown code of the component JVM Process Memory Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The color management (CMM) functionality in the 2D component in Oracle Java SE 7 Update 15 and earlier, 6 Update 41 and earlier, and 5.0 Update 40 and earlier allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (crash) via an image with crafted raster parameters, which triggers (1) an out-of-bounds read or (2) memory corruption in the JVM, as exploited in the wild in February 2013.

The weakness was presented 03/01/2013 by Vitaliy Toropov (TippingPoint) with TippingPoint's Zero Day Initiative as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at prod.lists.apple.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-1493 since 01/30/2013. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 12/09/2024). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product decreasing in the near future.

A public exploit has been developed by Metasploit and been published 3 weeks after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at pastie.org. It is declared as attacked. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69726 (Amazon Linux AMI : java-1.6.0-openjdk (ALAS-2013-167)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121160 (IBM Java SDK Multiple Vulnerabilities (IV37419,IV37422,PM85171)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with Microsoft Silverlight, Adobe Flash or Javascript as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published 3 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 26948. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12847.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (24904), Zero-Day.cz (45), Tenable (69726), SecurityFocus (BID 58238†) and OSVDB (90737†). Additional details are provided at news.cnet.com. See VDB-7855 for similar entry. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
