ownCloud Server up to 7.0.5/8.0.3 on Windows routing path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in ownCloud Server up to 7.0.5/8.0.3 on Windows (Cloud Software). This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the component routing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Directory traversal vulnerability in the routing component in ownCloud Server before 7.0.6 and 8.0.x before 8.0.4, when running on Windows, allows remote attackers to reinstall the application or execute arbitrary code via unspecified vectors.

The weakness was released 10/21/2015 by Lukas Reschke (Website). The advisory is available at owncloud.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-4716 since 06/22/2015. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1006 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 86430 (Debian DSA-3373-1 : owncloud - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175528 (Debian Security Update for owncloud (DSA 3373-1)).

Upgrading to version 7.0.6 or 8.0.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (86430), SecurityFocus (BID 76159†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-56628†).
