This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2015-7017 since 09/16/2015. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. Multiple memory corruption issues existed in the handling of font files. These issues were addressed through improved bounds checking.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 86603 (Apple iTunes < 12.3.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities (uncredentialed check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Peer-To-Peer File Sharing. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 124198 (Apple iTunes Prior to 12.3.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2015-10-21-5)).

Upgrading to version 9.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
