The manipulation as part of a Font File leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. The weakness was disclosed 10/21/2015 by John Villamil with Yahoo Pentest Team as HT205370 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2015-7017 since 09/16/2015. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. Multiple memory corruption issues existed in the handling of font files. These issues were addressed through improved bounds checking.

It is assigned to the family Peer-To-Peer File Sharing. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 124198 (Apple iTunes Prior to 12.3.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2015-10-21-5)).
Upgrading to version 9.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
