The weakness was presented 10/21/2015 by Ian Beer with Google Project Zero as HT205370 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-6995. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The advisory points out:
A memory corruption issue existed in the parsing of disk images. This issue was addressed through improved memory handling.
It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $100k and more. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 124182 (Apple Mac OS X Security Update 2015-007 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2015-10-21-4)).
Upgrading to version 9.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
