A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Apple iOS up to 9.0 (Smartphone Operating System). This vulnerability affects the function AtomicBufferedFile of the component Security. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a double free vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-415. Double free vulnerability in Apple iOS before 9.1 and OS X before 10.11.1 allows attackers to write to arbitrary files via a crafted app that accesses AtomicBufferedFile descriptors.
The weakness was published 10/21/2015 by David Benjamin, Greg Kerr, Mark Mentovai and Sergey Ulanov with Google Chrome Team as HT205370 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at support.apple.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-6983 since 09/16/2015. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The advisory points out:
A double free issue existed in the handling of AtomicBufferedFile descriptors. This issue was addressed through improved validation of AtomicBufferedFile descriptors.
