A vulnerability was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.11.0 (Operating System). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the component apache_mod_php. Multiple vulnerabilities existed in PHP versions prior to 5.5.29 and 5.4.45. These were addressed by updating PHP to versions 5.5.29 and 5.4.45.
A public exploit has been developed by Taoguang Chen and been published even before and not after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 35 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 93161 (SUSE SLES11 Security Update : php53 (SUSE-SU-2016:1638-1) (BACKRONYM)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 13108 (PHP Multiple Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (GHOST)).
Upgrading to version 10.11.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 19390.
