The weakness was disclosed 10/21/2015 by Mark Brand with Google Project Zero as HT205375 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-7003 since 09/16/2015. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project. An uninitialized memory issue existed in coreaudiod. This issue was addressed through improved memory initialization.
The exploit is available at packetstormsecurity.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 86654 (Mac OS X < 10.11.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 124172 (Apple Mac OS X v10.11.1 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2015-10-21-4)).
Upgrading to version 10.11.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
