A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in ntpd 4.2.8 (Network Management Software). Affected is the function CRYPTO_ASSOC. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-399. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

Memory leak in the CRYPTO_ASSOC function in ntpd in NTP 4.2.x before 4.2.8p4, and 4.3.x before 4.3.77 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory consumption).

The weakness was disclosed 10/21/2015 as cisco-sa-20151021-ntp as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at tools.cisco.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2015-7701 since 10/04/2015. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 88055 (AIX 6.1 TL 9 : ntp (IV79942) (deprecated)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family AIX Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 38684 (Network Time Protocol Multiple Security Vulnerabilities (ntp-4.2.8p4)).

Upgrading to version 4.2.8p4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
