A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Joomla CMS up to 3.4.4 (Content Management System). Affected is an unknown functionality. SQL injection vulnerability in the getListQuery function in administrator/components/com_contenthistory/models/history.php in Joomla! 3.2 before 3.4.5 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary SQL commands via the list[select] parameter to index.php.
The weakness was published 10/23/2015 by Asaf Orpani and Netanel Rubin (Website). The advisory is available at developer.joomla.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2015-7857 since 10/18/2015. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1505 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
A public exploit has been developed by Metasploit in Ruby and been published 2 months after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 86585 (FreeBSD : Joomla! -- Core - SQL Injection/ACL Violation vulnerabilities (0ebc6e78-7ac6-11e5-b35a-002590263bf5)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 11538 (Joomla! com_contenthistory SQL Injection Vulnerability).
Upgrading to version 3.4.5 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 21752.
