Joomla CMS up to 3.4.3 sql injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Joomla CMS up to 3.4.3 (Content Management System) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a sql injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-89. The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

SQL injection vulnerability in Joomla! 3.2 before 3.4.4 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary SQL commands via unspecified vectors, a different vulnerability than CVE-2015-7297.

The weakness was released 10/23/2015 by Asaf Orpani and Netanel Rubin (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at developer.joomla.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-7858 since 10/18/2015. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1505 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

A public exploit has been developed by Metasploit in Ruby and been published 2 months after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 86585 (FreeBSD : Joomla! -- Core - SQL Injection/ACL Violation vulnerabilities (0ebc6e78-7ac6-11e5-b35a-002590263bf5)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 11538 (Joomla! com_contenthistory SQL Injection Vulnerability).

Upgrading to version 3.4.5 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 21752.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (38797), Tenable (86585), SecurityFocus (BID 77295†), SecurityTracker (ID 1033950†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-53954†).
