A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Mozilla Firefox up to 19.0.1 (Web Browser). This issue affects the function document.execCommand in the library editor/libeditor/base/nsEditor.cpp of the component HTML Editor. Use-after-free vulnerability in the nsEditor::IsPreformatted function in editor/libeditor/base/nsEditor.cpp in Mozilla Firefox before 19.0.2, Firefox ESR 17.x before 17.0.4, Thunderbird before 17.0.4, Thunderbird ESR 17.x before 17.0.4, and SeaMonkey before 2.16.1 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via vectors involving an execCommand call.
The bug was discovered 02/26/2013. The weakness was published 03/07/2013 with VUPEN Security as 2013-29 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at mozilla.org. The public release has been coordinated with Mozilla. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-0787 since 01/02/2013. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details as well as a private exploit are known.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 9 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74925 (openSUSE Security Update : xulrunner (openSUSE-SU-2013:0466-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165767 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for Mozilla Firefox (SUSE-SU-2013:0471-1)).
Upgrading to version 19.0.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12852.
