A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in PHP up to 5.4.12 (Programming Language Software). This vulnerability affects the function soap_xmlParseFile of the file ext/soap/php_xml.c. The SOAP parser in PHP before 5.3.23 and 5.4.x before 5.4.13 allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via a SOAP WSDL file containing an XML external entity declaration in conjunction with an entity reference, related to an XML External Entity (XXE) issue in the soap_xmlParseFile and soap_xmlParseMemory functions. NOTE: this vulnerability exists because of an incorrect fix for CVE-2013-1824.
The weakness was shared 03/05/2013 by Moritz Muehlenhoff as 702221 as not defined mailinglist post (Maillist). The advisory is available at bugs.debian.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-1643 since 02/10/2013. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1592 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 65547 (Ubuntu 8.04 LTS / 10.04 LTS / 11.10 / 12.04 LTS / 12.10 : php5 vulnerability (USN-1761-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. Upgrading to version 5.4.13 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at git.php.net. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem.
