Linux Kernel 3.8.0/3.8.1/3.8.2 process_keys.c install_user_keyrings race condition

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 3.8.0/3.8.1/3.8.2 (Operating System). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects the function install_user_keyrings of the file security/keys/process_keys.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

Race condition in the install_user_keyrings function in security/keys/process_keys.c in the Linux kernel before 3.8.3 allows local users to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and system crash) via crafted keyctl system calls that trigger keyring operations in simultaneous threads.

The weakness was released 02/28/2013 by Mateusz Guzik with Red Hat as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The public release was coordinated with Linux. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-1792 since 02/19/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 65183 (Fedora 18 : kernel-3.8.2-206.fc18 (2013-3630)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166761 (OpenSuSE Security Update for Kernel (openSUSE-SU-2014:0204-1)).

Upgrading to version 3.8.3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published 6 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (82643), Tenable (65183), SecurityFocus (BID 58368†), OSVDB (90951†) and Secunia (SA52441†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-7938, VDB-7994, VDB-12137 and VDB-12786.
