Linux Kernel 3.8.0/3.8.1/3.8.2/3.8.3 sctp_getsockopt_assoc_stats input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Linux Kernel 3.8.0/3.8.1/3.8.2/3.8.3 (Operating System). Affected is the function sctp_getsockopt_assoc_stats. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The sctp_getsockopt_assoc_stats function in net/sctp/socket.c in the Linux kernel before 3.8.4 does not validate a size value before proceeding to a copy_from_user operation, which allows local users to gain privileges via a crafted application that contains an SCTP_GET_ASSOC_STATS getsockopt system call.

The weakness was presented 03/07/2013 by Petr Matousek with grsecurity as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. The vendor was not involved in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-1828 since 02/19/2013. The exploitability is told to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed by Petr Matousek in ANSI C and been published 6 days after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at grsecurity.net. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 65183 (Fedora 18 : kernel-3.8.2-206.fc18 (2013-3630)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (82664), Exploit-DB (24747), Tenable (65183), SecurityFocus (BID 58389†) and OSVDB (91042†). See VDB-7901, VDB-63775, VDB-63774 and VDB-63773 for similar entries. VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
