Linux Kernel 3.0.63 library cryptographic issue

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 3.0.63 (Operating System). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects the function library. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-310. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

The report API in the crypto user configuration API in the Linux kernel through 3.8.2 uses an incorrect C library function for copying strings, which allows local users to obtain sensitive information from kernel stack memory by leveraging the CAP_NET_ADMIN capability.

The weakness was presented 03/15/2013 by Mathias Krause (Website). The advisory is shared at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-2546 since 03/08/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1600 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 65183 (Fedora 18 : kernel-3.8.2-206.fc18 (2013-3630)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (82856), Tenable (65183), SecurityFocus (BID 58382†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-40856†). See VDB-7901, VDB-7938, VDB-63775 and VDB-63774 for similar entries. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
