Linux Kernel up to 3.5.6 xfrm_user Subsystem net/xfrm/xfrm_user.c dump_one_state null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability marked as problematic has been reported in Linux Kernel up to 3.5.6. This impacts the function dump_one_state of the file net/xfrm/xfrm_user.c of the component xfrm_user Subsystem. The manipulation leads to null pointer dereference. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-1826. No exploit exists. To fix this issue, it is recommended to deploy a patch.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 3.5.6 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. This issue affects the function dump_one_state of the file net/xfrm/xfrm_user.c of the component xfrm_user Subsystem. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

The xfrm_state_netlink function in net/xfrm/xfrm_user.c in the Linux kernel before 3.5.7 does not properly handle error conditions in dump_one_state function calls, which allows local users to gain privileges or cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and system crash) by leveraging the CAP_NET_ADMIN capability.

The weakness was disclosed 03/05/2013 by Mathias Krause as 2013/q1/589 as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. The vendor was not involved in the public release. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-1826 since 02/19/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66204 (CentOS 6 : kernel (CESA-2013:0744)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195399 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux-ec2 Vulnerabilities (USN-1829-1)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at seclists.org.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (66204), SecurityFocus (BID 58381†), OSVDB (90957†), Secunia (SA53053†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-38661†). The entries VDB-7842, VDB-7908, VDB-7909 and VDB-7910 are pretty similar. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
