Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 3.5.1/3.5.2/3.5.3 (Operating System). It has been classified as problematic. Affected is an unknown code block of the file net/dccp/ccid.h of the component dccp Subsystem. The manipulation of the argument ccid with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
net/dccp/ccid.h in the Linux kernel before 3.5.4 allows local users to gain privileges or cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and system crash) by leveraging the CAP_NET_ADMIN capability for a certain (1) sender or (2) receiver getsockopt call.
The weakness was presented 03/05/2013 by Mathias Krause as 2013/q1/589 as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. The public release happened without coordination with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-1827 since 02/19/2013. The exploitability is told to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66204 (CentOS 6 : kernel (CESA-2013:0744)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166795 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for Linux Kernel (SUSE-SU-2014:0536-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at seclists.org.
