A vulnerability was found in Adobe Acrobat up to 6.0.2 on Windows (Document Reader Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function RTLHeapFree of the file URL Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Buffer overflow in the ActiveX component (pdf.ocx) for Adobe Acrobat 5.0.5 and Acrobat Reader, and possibly other versions, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a URI for a PDF file with a null terminator (%00) followed by a long string.
The bug was discovered 08/13/2004. The weakness was released 08/15/2004 by Rafel Ivgi (The Insider) with iDEFENSE (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at idefense.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2004-0629 since 07/07/2004. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 8 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
