Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Bouncy Castle Java Library up to 1.50 (Software Library). This affects an unknown functionality of the component Diffie-Hellman Key Exchange. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-310. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The Bouncy Castle Java library before 1.51 does not validate a point is withing the elliptic curve, which makes it easier for remote attackers to obtain private keys via a series of crafted elliptic curve Diffie Hellman (ECDH) key exchanges, aka an "invalid curve attack."
The weakness was released 11/09/2015 (Website). The advisory is shared at openwall.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-7940 since 10/22/2015. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1600 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 86740 (openSUSE Security Update : bouncycastle (openSUSE-2015-705)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370164 (Oracle VM VirtualBox Multiple Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 1.51 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (86740), EUVD (EUVD-2018-0502), SecurityFocus (BID 79091†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-54590†).
