hostapd/wpa_supplicant up to 2.4 NDEF Record Parser numeric error

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in hostapd and wpa_supplicant up to 2.4. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component NDEF Record Parser. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-189. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

Multiple integer overflows in the NDEF record parser in hostapd before 2.5 and wpa_supplicant before 2.5 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (process crash or infinite loop) via a large payload length field value in an (1) WPS or (2) P2P NFC NDEF record, which triggers an out-of-bounds read.

The weakness was disclosed 11/09/2015 by Jouni Malinen (Website). The advisory is available at w1.fi. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-8041 since 11/02/2015. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 86833 (Debian DSA-3397-1 : wpa - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169165 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for wpa_supplicant (SUSE-SU-2016:2305-1)).

Upgrading to version 2.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 1 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (86833), SecurityFocus (BID 75604†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-54384†). The entries VDB-75888, VDB-75889 and VDB-80093 are pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
