Details
A vulnerability has been found in libxml2 (Document Processing Software) (the affected version is unknown) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function xmlParseConditionalSections of the file parser.c of the component XML Data Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
The xmlParseConditionalSections function in parser.c in libxml2 does not properly skip intermediary entities when it stops parsing invalid input, which allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read and crash) via crafted XML data, a different vulnerability than CVE-2015-7941.
The weakness was presented 11/18/2015 by Kostya Serebryany as Bug 756456 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.gnome.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-7942 since 10/22/2015. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 87000 (FreeBSD : libxml2 -- multiple vulnerabilities (e5423caf-8fb8-11e5-918c-bcaec565249c)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 351588 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for libxml2: ALAS2-2019-1220).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
