Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Apple iOS up to 8.3 (Smartphone Operating System). This issue affects the function fts3_tokenizer of the component SQLite. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
The fts3_tokenizer function in SQLite, as used in Apple iOS before 8.4 and OS X before 10.10.4, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (application crash) via a SQL command that triggers an API call with a crafted pointer value in the second argument.
The weakness was presented 11/22/2015 by Peter Rutenbar (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at zerodayinitiative.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-7036 since 09/16/2015. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 04/18/2018). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 84488 (Mac OS X 10.10.x < 10.10.4 Multiple Vulnerabilities (GHOST) (Logjam)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context c.
Upgrading to version 8.4 or 9.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 19788.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (84488), SecurityFocus (BID 77646†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-54498†).
