PCRE before 8.38 mishandles the (?(<digits>) and (?(R<digits>) conditions, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (integer overflow) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted regular expression, as demonstrated by a JavaScript RegExp object encountered by Konqueror.
The weakness was published 12/02/2015 (oss-sec). The advisory is available at openwall.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-8394. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 11626 (PHP Versions Prior to 5.6.18/5.5.32 Multiple Vulnerabilities).
