Details
A vulnerability classified as very critical was found in PCRE up to 8.37 (Programming Tool Software). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality. The manipulation with the input value /(?|(\kPm)|(?Pm))/ leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
PCRE before 8.38 mishandles the /(?|(\k'Pm')|(?'Pm'))/ pattern and related patterns with certain forward references, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (buffer overflow) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted regular expression, as demonstrated by a JavaScript RegExp object encountered by Konqueror.
The weakness was released 12/02/2015 (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at openwall.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-8385 since 12/01/2015. The attack can be launched remotely.
