Details
A vulnerability was found in PCRE up to 8.37 (Programming Tool Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function pcre_exec of the file pcre_exec.c. The manipulation with the input value // leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The pcre_exec function in pcre_exec.c in PCRE before 8.38 mishandles a // pattern with a \01 string, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (heap-based buffer overflow) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted regular expression, as demonstrated by a JavaScript RegExp object encountered by Konqueror.
The weakness was released 12/02/2015 by Wen Guanxing (Website). The advisory is shared for download at bugs.exim.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-8380 since 12/01/2015.
