A vulnerability was found in PCRE up to 8.35 (Programming Tool Software). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the file /(((a\2)|(a*)\g</-1>/))*/. The manipulation with the input value /(((a\2)|(a*)\g<-1>))*/ leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. PCRE before 8.36 mishandles the /(((a\2)|(a*)\g<-1>))*/ pattern and related patterns with certain internal recursive back references, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (segmentation fault) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted regular expression, as demonstrated by a JavaScript RegExp object encountered by Konqueror.
