Summary
A vulnerability marked as critical has been reported in PCRE up to 8.37. Affected by this issue is the function compile_regex of the file pcre_compile.c. Performing a manipulation with the input /(?J:(?|(:(?|(?'R')(\k'R')|((?'R')))H'Rk'Rf)|s(?'R'))))/ as part of Regex Pattern results in memory corruption.
This vulnerability is reported as CVE-2015-8381. The attack is possible to be carried out remotely. No exploit exists.
It is suggested to upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability was found in PCRE up to 8.37 (Programming Tool Software). It has been classified as very critical. This affects the function compile_regex of the file pcre_compile.c. The manipulation with the input value /(?J:(?|(:(?|(?'R')(\k'R')|((?'R')))H'Rk'Rf)|s(?'R'))))/ leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The compile_regex function in pcre_compile.c in PCRE before 8.38 and pcre2_compile.c in PCRE2 before 10.2x mishandles the /(?J:(?|(:(?|(?'R')(\k'R')|((?'R')))H'Rk'Rf)|s(?'R'))))/ and /(?J:(?|(:(?|(?'R')(\z(?|(?'R')(\k'R')|((?'R')))k'R')|((?'R')))H'Ak'Rf)|s(?'R')))/ patterns, and related patterns with certain group references, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (heap-based buffer overflow) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted regular expression, as demonstrated by a JavaScript RegExp object encountered by Konqueror.
The weakness was disclosed 12/02/2015 by Wen Guanxing (AdLab) with Venustech ADLAB (Website). The advisory is shared at bugs.exim.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-8381 since 12/01/2015. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 06/28/2022).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 91983 (GLSA-201607-02 : libpcre: Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196440 (Ubuntu Security Notification for pcre3 vulnerabilities (USN-2943-1)).
Upgrading to version 8.38 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 8 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (91983), SecurityFocus (BID 76187†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-54791†). The entries VDB-75660, VDB-79370, VDB-79371 and VDB-79376 are pretty similar. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
