OpenSSL up to 1.0.1p/1.0.2d Certificate Verification PSS null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability has been found in OpenSSL up to 1.0.1p/1.0.2d and classified as problematic. This affects an unknown part of the component Certificate Verification. This manipulation of the argument PSS causes null pointer dereference. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-3194. The attack can be initiated remotely. There is not any exploit available. The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in OpenSSL up to 1.0.1p/1.0.2d (Network Encryption Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the component Certificate Verification. The manipulation of the argument PSS with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability.

The weakness was released 12/03/2015 by Loïc Jonas Etienne with Qnective AG as 20151203.txt as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at openssl.org. The public release was coordinated with the project team. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-3194 since 04/10/2015. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The advisory points out:

The signature verification routines will crash with a NULL pointer dereference if presented with an ASN.1 signature using the RSA PSS algorithm and absent mask generation function parameter. Since these routines are used to verify certificate signature algorithms this can be used to crash any certificate verification operation and exploited in a DoS attack. Any application which performs certificate verification is vulnerable including OpenSSL clients and servers which enable client authentication.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 98 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 87435 (F5 Networks BIG-IP : OpenSSL vulnerability (K86772626)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family F5 Networks Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 371218 (Apple macOS Mojave 10.14 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2018-9-24-1)).

Upgrading to version 1.0.1q or 1.0.2e eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 22445.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (108503), Tenable (87435), SecurityFocus (BID 78623†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-56809†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-78550, VDB-78551, VDB-79410 and VDB-79412.
